Strategies to strengthen employment retention

There are a range of different strategies that can be used in order to strengthen the employment retention to ensure that employees are happy and are willing to stay on the job. Different strategies include;

- Offered training - as this highlights to the employees how as a manager you are taking interest in their education and are invested in their career. Thus, by offering them training it helps the employee improve and develop their performance.

- Providing guidance – as an employee they have the right to be aware of their job duties and how they should perform them therefore as a customer service manage its their responsibility to provide regular feedback on the employees performance to ensure the employee knows what aspects they need to improve as this reduces the chances of the employee being confused about their job and leaving because they believe they aren’t being guided in the right way.

- Pay well – Even though it is difficult to pay competitive salaries, M&S is a well-known high end retail store therefore employees would be looking to be getting paid well because if another job was offered to them and there was an increase in their hourly rate by 10/20% the current employee at M&S would be likely to leave in order to work for another business. Therefore M&s have to be able to pay a good wage in order to attract potential employees and keep their current employees from leaving them.

- Competitive benefit packages – this is having a package that fits the needs of the employees for instance providing health insurance, life insurance and retirement saving plans could help retain employees. Other perks such as flextime will help employees accommodate the employees in their personal lives which will then encourage them to stay on the job.

- Promotion within the business – promotions available within the business will help motivate the employees to better their performance in order to be scouted by the customer service manager. Employees may get frustrated if there are no promotions internally as they may believe there no future for themselves in the business, therefore M&S could try promoting sales assistant into head of a certain department such as the food hall.

- Open communication between employee and management – M&S could try creating an open communication between the employees and the management team. This could be done by holding regular meeting where employees can offer any potential ideas or ask questions about their job role or the store, by doing so this encourages employees to speak more often with their manager without the fear of consequences.

- Financial rewards – M&S can offer stock options for employees, who meet performance goals and are motivated, as well as an annual raise or annual bonus if employees have met their specific performance goals. This will help motivate the employees to work to their best ability in order to receive the financial bonuses.
