Kristin Linklater Research Paper
Kristin Linklater is a Scottish vocal coach that had a successful academic and theatrical career in the United States and Europe for the past fifty years. Her work helped a lot of actors to improve their “acting voice”, being the most famous one in my opinion Patrick Stewart.
She studied at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, but she moved to the United States in the early 1960s and started to offer an innovative approach to voice training for actors and immediately a lot of different companies that work with actors ask for her services. She had been a professor in New York University, Emerson College (Boston) and Columbia University (New York), but since 2013 she teaches permanently at her purpose built private voice center in Orkney, Scotland.
Me as an actor the thing that I found most interesting was a list that she gave saying what you should and what you should not do to have a healthy voice. You need to get lots of sleep, because rest relieves the vocal cords. Try to persuade your director not to set your play in a sandpit. Always do a 20-to-60-minute voice and body warm-up as close as possible to the start of every rehearsal and performance. Fall in love with your breathing. Do pant loosely, often, and happily, like a puppy, this is to awaken your breath. Also you need to yawn a lot. The idea here is to open your throat and smile as you yawn. A good exercise is to stretch the middle of your tongue out of your mouth, placing the tip of the tongue down behind your bottom teeth. One of the most important for me, do laugh out loud, and do cry if you feel like it. If you feel like it a lot, set the alarm and give yourself a deadline to stop and do something else. Sing in the shower. Singing is good and helpful (David Finkle).
The things the you should not do are: Don't smoke. Smoking is bad for your vocal cords and your lungs. Don't drink alcohol of any kind. Alcohol acts as a diuretic and can dehydrate you. Don't drink caffeinated drinks. A caffeinated drink will act also as a diuretic. Don't stay up late. When you do, it often means shouting over the noise in a bar. Don't spend your afternoon yelling at a football match or the like. Don't do imitation Broadway belting at a karaoke bar. Don't eat chocolate or cheese. Don't drink milk before a show (David Finkle).
One of her best works is the Linklater voice technique, the workshop will give a practical, experiential overview of the voice
