In the Stephen w. Hawkins book the universe in a nut Shell he tries to explain the great mathematics and physics behind the universe, and does it so in a way that anyone could understand it, but at the same time using complex definitions and concepts usually just used in the field of quantum mechanics. In one chapter in specific he compares the logic behind his favorite sci-fi TV show Star Trek, he mentions that in this universe (which in theory is ours couple of hundreds of years from ours) the society is very advance in comparison to ours, in every aspect: science, technology and political organizations. In which he explains that every aspect of this dystopic society is almost to the point of absolute perfection.
And He rather likes to question this image of science and technology getting to a stationary point. He argues that in ten thousand years since the last ice age, in no other point in human history has the technology and knowledge has been in a static motion. He even points out that throughout history there has been some throwbacks, for example in the darks ages posterior to the fall of the roman empire.
He then goes on to say that the population of the world is the indicator of our capacity to conserve technology, supplies and to feed us, and that, that number has been in exponential growth, to be precise 1.9 percent annually, which means that every 40 years the global population will double in its size. Other indicators of the recent technological developments are the electricity consumption, the number of scientific articles published (which both show exponential growth in recent years), And there´s no signs that this grow will stop in any point in the near future.
In fantastic worlds like the ne depicted in star trek, technology and society, has been max out. Which means that everything has been discovered and that there´s no more things that are unknown; and in consequence the universe will have to options, keep looking for new things or to
