Racism is still alive today. After the election of President Donald Trump, several people around the US express their feelings about the African American community, much of which was shown in the media. For example, shortly after the election a resident in Pittsburg California, a resident hung a racist banner outside of his house which stated, ““You Can Hang a nigger by a Tree, Equal Rights He’ll Never See.” I was absolutely devastated after seeing this in the media. It shows how far we, as a country have come. Students across the country complained about the prevalence of racism occurring in their schools, for example at a Minnesota high school (i.e., Maple Grove Senior High School) students vandalized campus with swastika, and writings in the bathroom saying “go back to Africa”, “whites only”. It has gotten so bad that people are rephrasing Donald Trump’s slogan used during the presidential campaign saying “Make America great again” to “make America white again”. This is a clear sign of racism.

I have personally experienced racism. During my sophomore year of high school I was involved in a confrontation with my history teacher. A student called his friend a “nigga” in class. Afterwards, the teacher called me up to the front of the classroom where the boy was, he then put his hand next to mines and he pointed to my skin. I instantly went back to my seat and said “what that is supposed to mean…basically you are saying that I’m a “nigga”. Being that I was offended, and felt like the teacher was being racist. I complained to my mother and school officials. Sad to say, nothing was ever done, no suspension, no write-up or anything. I have to say since that particular experience, I have not experience racism directly.

Throughout the history of life racism has been a major thing in many of the important events in our nation's past tense. Racism can be defined as a lot of things like laws that deny individuals malleable rights. We, as people of the “United” States of America must do whatever in our power to make sure we suppress the revitalization of racism in America. Back in the day, blacks had no rights due to the being enslaved, such as freedom of speech, and the right to vote. Moreover, with the help of progressive people we were granted freedom and equal protection under law. We have many of different laws that protect our rights, freedom, and right to equal access to education no matter what. Over several years, blacks never gave up and fought hard to get all of their rights granted to them.

One key question that I would love to pose to racists is how would they feel if they were judge based on the color of their skin and not the content of their character? It is not fun walking around and people are pointing, laughing, and talking negative about you because of the color of your skin or how your hair looks. People should not do things like as it may potentially lower people’s self-esteem. We should live in a world where an individual skin color or nationality, hair or anything else should not matter. Sometime people cannot help the way that they look. It disgusts me that black are referred to as “ghetto”, for the same things that whites does and are not degraded for. We must demand a change, and fast.
