Another huge problem social media has created is cyber bullying and crimes online. “93% of teenagers age 12-17 use the internet. Of the 93%, 63% of them do on a daily basis” (Social Networking). This is a shockingly high number of the younger generation using the Internet and with such a high use there is a higher risk of cyber crimes and cyber bullying. Children are children. They do not have the experience or knowledge that adult’s do, which makes it easier for them to fall into a cyber crime or cyber bullying trap. With children having access to the Internet, they are able to escape the boundaries their parents put up for them and interact with anyone worldwide. It is a lot harder for parents to “filter” what their kids are exposed to over the Internet.
Over the years social media has grown significantly which comes with both some advantages and disadvantages. There are a lot of positive things that social media has brought to the table. Social media has allowed humans to interact with anyone they might need to even if the other person is located across the world. Social media enables us to share stories, picture and current updates on our lives. We are able to keep up with our peer’s lives and even see it through pictures seconds after it was captured. Social media has also allowed business’s to prosper by having an option for free advertising. From certain standpoints social media has helped to advance our society.
Social media has brought forth many new positive things in our lives. That being said, we cannot ignore how the benefits of social media are being abused. With the opportunity to connect with anyone by making one click, it has also made it easier for criminals to find almost any type of information they please. Social media has allowed us to keep in touch with our friends but has also taken away the interpersonal connection at the same time. In a society that is driven on networking and making more and more relationships, I argue that we are relying on social media too heavily to do that work for us. Social media has opened my eyes to how vulnerable us as humans are. The sad truth is that social media is controlling each and every one of us and I do not see this changing in the near future.
