Chapter ideas I may use in the classroom:
Sing It Out is an idea that I would use in the classroom with my students. Singing it out involves sounding out words in the form of a song. The text gives the example of using “If you’re happy and you know it”. Once you sing the song with your students, and they are familiar with the words and tune of the song, you change the words of the song in order to sound out different words. The text explains the method of sounding it out and how it is similar to sing it out, “Hearing individual sounds and then putting them together quickly to hear a word that is already known orally is the same process often encouraged by teachers when they say, “sound it out!”.” (pg. 151). I think this is a good idea to use in the classroom especially because it would be a fun way to involve the students and get them excited about learning. Nursery rhymes and songs that most students know also give them a sense of confidence in learning something new, since they already are familiar with the tune. This is also a good technique because when students move on to writing words themselves, they can use this method to sound words out in their head to help them become better readers and writers. This allows students to blend spoken sounds together to form words, and the text states, “Blending is a critical skill for learning to read successfully.” (pg. 151). This method of teaching students to sound out words is extremely beneficial and a great way to engage students.
