Chapter 1: Mrs. Rachel Lynde Is Surprised

Mrs. Rachel Lynde is the neighbor of the brothers Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, she is surprised with the arrival of Anne Shirley, an orphan girl who has passed through several adoptive families but has not managed to feel good with any. She arrives at Avonlea, which is a small rural village in Canada on Prince Edward Island. Anne is sent by mistake to Green Gables, the farm of the Cuthbert brothers, single brothers who want to adopt a child to help them on the farm. However, Anne, she manages to sleep in their house and convince them to stay there.

Chapter 2: Marilla Makes Up Her Mind

Marilla and Anne arrive at Mrs. Spencer’s orphanage and explain the mistake. Mrs. Spencer says that the problem can be fixed because a woman, Mrs. Peter Blewett, wants to adopt a girl to help with her children, so Anne can be handed over to her, and the Cuthbert siblings would adopt the boy they wanted. Marilla doesn't like the idea because Mrs. Blewett is known for her nastiness, and for mistreat her servants. Marilla takes Anne back to Green Gables, saying she needs time to think it. Mattew is so adamant about keeping Anne and it surprises to Marilla.

Chapter 3: Mrs. Rachel Lynde Is Properly Horrified

Two weeks later, Mrs. Rachel comes to meet Anne. She mocks the red color of her hair and her appearance. Anne reacts by shouting nicknames and saying that she hates her. Mrs. Rachel urges Marilla to punish Anne. Marilla tells Anne that the punishment is that she apologizes to Mrs. Rachel, Anne refuses to do and she is locked in her room for the whole day. Matthew decides to go to see her when Marilla is not and persuades her to comply with the punishment. Anne apologizes sincerely to Mrs. Rachel, and she regrets having judged her, she begins to like her.

Chapter 14: Anne’s Confession

Marilla loses a brooch and blames Anne for it, two days before the picnic. Marilla sends Anne to her room saying that she can’t leave there until she confesses what she did. Anne makes a false confession so she can go to the picnic, but Marilla won’t let her go. Fortunately, Marilla finds the brooch while looking for a black vest to repair it, apologizes to Anne and lets her go to her picnic. When she arrives back home, she tells the Cuthbert siblings about her adventures at the picnic and she likes ice cream.
