Moreover, I notice that my client disclosed a couple of issues in one sentences, I should help her to summarize the issues she have said and remember all of them. It can help me systematically to clarify her problem step by step.
And I notice that I should not shift the topic and interrupt her sharing. It probably let her feel defensive. And I should not provide many premature advices for her because it might deter my client from expressing her feelings, needs and concern here and now.
After learning in lessons, I think that being an interviewer is not easy. The sole responsibility of being a counsellor is to help client to help themselves. Mostly, we should put ourselves into others’ shoes. The empathic understanding is of most important. We should feel with our clients. In future, I am going to be a social worker. I think the differences between social worker and the psychologist is that we can accompany our client to face with the problem together.
Most importantly, we should understand ourselves and explore ourselves before do a counselling with our client. Otherwise, we probably misuse the counselling to help to fulfill our personal needs. It turns out that we do not really help our client, but counsellor. Moreover, we should know more about ourselves of what are afraid of and what sensitive issues we cannot accept in our inner side. For example, the issue of homosexuality.
Apart from this is that I think everyone should learn some counselling skills. It is not only for the counselling professional. We could use the counselling skills to deal with our daily life. For example, our relationships.
In the classroom, I feel glad to have the opportunity to sort out my past and ideas. After all, this year, I have too many difficulties and my thoughts and emotions state are messy. In the classroom learning experience, I could find the starting point of being a social worker to pursuit my goals. Why my goal is to become a social worker instead of being a businessman to make a lot of money or to get rid of poverty. It is all because this meaningful job can let me find the life satisfaction of helping people. Because I know that my character is emotion-led. I want to make a difference in our society, helping people around me is what I have been pursuing
