I believe that hypnosis is a state of deep relaxation of both the body and mind, it is similar to a state of normal sleep but the person is aware, awake and conscious but can be guided to their subconscious where suggestion can be made to the benefit of the person, it is also a way that the person can take back control in a safe, secure, controlled and relaxed environment. Hypnosis is not mind control or an alternative to counselling or Psychotherapy but I feel that it is an important part of therapy for some mental health conditions and also for people who believe it can help with everyday struggles they have such as weight control, smoking, confidence etc. I do feel hypnosis works for some but not others, I feel the person must be willing and wanting the hypnosis to work as any resistance by the client means as a hypnotherapist we cannot get to or will struggle to get to the subconscious level we require for hypnosis to work, the hypnotic state is also a different experience for each individual and each individual has a choice and is never forced into a hypnotic state.

Because hypnosis is where the client is in a state of deep relaxation many of the physical signs you would recognise on yourself and others and liken to being in a dream like state or a world of your own scenario or similar to when you are starting to nod off to sleep.

It is interesting to learn about the 4 brain waves and what each represent, I often find myself engrossed in a book and zoning out from the world around me, I now realise this is my way of a relaxed state of mind.

I am finding it difficult at this time to do my PMR with my partner as he doesn’t believe he can ever be hypnotised and resists, on my first attempt we were both uncomfortable and nervous but did continue on with my PMR but it wasn’t successful. On our second session I found that he did respond a little and I noticed his breathing becoming deeper and his eyelids fluttering and a few relaxation movements in his arms and legs and after the session he did confess that his mind did start to switch off and his body relax a little but he then distracts himself by thinking and focusing on outside noises so he is not focusing on my voice and the feeling fades, he admits this is because he feels not in control and it scares him.

I think at this time doing the PMR on people that I know means there are a lot of feelings the same as my partners but I am not ready to try on a casual aquantance or a stranger but this is due to lack of experience and knowledge and confidence but this will improve and change as I learn more, understand more and practice more. I also have a preconceived idea of how I think the session should be going and then realise that it is not going as I think it should, again this will change with time and practise.

I do practise my PMR on myself in quiet alone times and as I have a stressful full time job am finding that I am starting to feel more relaxed in myself and due to this I am realising how important relaxation is not only in hypnotherapy but also in everyday life. I also realise that relaxation can come in many forms and for me reading, taking a long hot soak in the bath and after switching my mind off and just reflecting on the day but in a calm relaxed room also helps.

Also recording and listening to my PMR although really strange at first also helps me to learn and understand more.
