In my opinion the trench town of Trinidad is laventille and I think that the reason for crime and violence there is poverty, a lack of positive influence and the amount of single mother homes. Some people in these areas look for an easy way to get money and often get caught up in negative activities.
"Culture of Fear" and Culture of Honour"
Culture of honour refers to someone standing up for themselves using physical aggression when you are insulted of believe some aspect of their life is being threatened. Culture of fear is the concept that people may incite fear in the general public to achieve political goals. In Trinidad and Tobago these terms can be applied for example when some person’s get into a car accident, they sometimes become very aggressive and attack the person who hit them. This can be culture of honour where the person was defending their possession. For culture of fear I would say the state of emergency was called to instil fear on the general public for some political gain.
Personal reaction
Before watching the documentary I had no idea that things were so bad. To me it really looks like the government has left this place as the forgotten town and they have some hope that eventually everyone there will kill out each other. It does not look like the government cares about the good citizens who are living in trench town. It is sad to know that the one school is located between two rival gangs. The children there are not in an environment that is suitable for learning. If there is no money how can those children every reach their true potential. The true heroes of that God forsaken town are the teachers who try to make a difference.
