In order for the Warden to help identify the problems he needs to elaborate more with his staff to see what they could have done to keep the disturbance from happening, but the issue came about when it was stated they did not address the living conditions of the prison by filing a complaint. I think the major hurdles that he is up against is making sure the staff is safe as well as the population of the inmates. First he would have to work on the major issue of the prison overcrowding. He can request the inmates with less severe crimes be placed on house arrest, restitution centers, or probation. This will help eliminate some of the overcrowding.

Solutions Section

Some of the ways he can help to eliminate prison overcrowding for Warden Stevenson are:

- They can decrease the amount of prisoners who are sent to prison or jail, or by decreasing the time offenders spend in prison or jail, and put the inmates in other programs to help cut down on costs.

- Individuals that have substance abuse issues and mental illnesses need to be housed in a separate facility due to the regular prison or jails not being equipped to give them they proper care they need.

- Offer more programs for offenders such as Anger Management, Domestic Violence, Drug Court programs and all these could be offered while the offender is on house arrest and/or probation.

The reason I picked these three explanations because they can help to reduce the overcrowding in the prison system. In the United States jails has increased by having more people than any place in the world the Pew Center on the States has informed that in 2008 that one in every 100 adults in the U.S. now lives behind bars! Because people have gotten use to just putting people in jail and as we we’ve been trying to “incarcerate our way” out of corruption for so long, the federal and state prisons and county jails are having an issue with overcrowding. The budgets has been cut, and they are trying to build newer facilities. Researchers has suggested the issue will be worse (http://jailovercrowding.com/index.php/the-problem).

Conclusion

In closing the United States has the highest incarceration rate in the world. You have individuals who commit crimes every day, which does not help the issue with the overcrowding. When you have a prison that is overcrowded that is a danger to the staff as well as the other inmates. When the prison has an overcrowding issue it poses a threat to the facility not being able to run their programs smoothly. In my opinion if the issues stated above were implemented it will help with the issue of overcrowding.
