Mood disorders are diagnosed by a physician, nursing practitioner, or mental health professional. The diagnostic process normally involves an interview with patients or their relatives. Also, psychiatrics or other mental illness health professionals may diagnose mood disorders through a complete medical history or psychiatric evaluations. Strictly speaking, the explanation, and the encouragement that occur within the doctor-patient relationship are not regarded as psychotherapy. However, a good doctor-patient relationship is of critical importance in treating patients with mood disorders.
Treatment for mood disorders is aimed at addressing the negative feelings and helping patients to feel better. Treatment effectiveness for mood disorders depends on a variety of factors including therapies for mood disorders, cognitive behavioral therapy treatment, and medically assisted treatment. The goal of therapy is to help patients cope with underlying mental illness, restore proper brain chemistry and find ways that help to relieve stress in a daily life. Sometimes, therapy, such as talk therapy or psychotherapy, may help patients to deal with many difficult events and may be enough to treat their illness. Cognitive behavior therapy generally focuses on actions and behaviors. Due to that treatment method, patients can recognize distorted thought patterns, and then actively work to place them with healthier beliefs. Ultimately, it is effective in any cases of anxiety where treatment can help to teach patients to cope with life’s difficulty circumstances better. In other cases, medication may be prescribed to correct the chemical imbalance in the brain. In fact, it is usually needed in these cases to help stabilize mood normally for the rest of that person's life (“Mood Disorder”, 2016). I think medication alone is not the best treatment for mood disorders. This is because it does not address psychological issues such as negative thoughts or low self-esteem. In fact, many patients realize that once they stop taking medication, their symptoms return. It is something that people have to depend so much on as they keep taking it. Besides that, family or friends can play a supporting role in the treatment. Supporting and understanding the patient’s condition can minimize their mood disorders. In addition to following the treatment plan, a person can be able to improve her/his mood disorders by getting enough sleep, taking regular exercise or engaging social activities.
All in all, mood disorders are the diseases that might not be looked at too seriously, but when in fact, they are very serious matter that should be handled correctly. Mood disorders can have many profound effects not only on individual’s life, but also the entire social setting. Many early diagnosis and treatment can reduce the severity of symptoms, enhance the person’s normal growth and development, and improve the quality of life of people with mood disorders. With the development of technology, I believe that there will be some new innovations in mood disorders herald called “ The edge of the future” addressing these conditions more effective at every level in the future.
