Question 25
- What is political culture, and why is it important to understand how politics works?
Political culture can be viewed as a political personality of a nation. This includes well-established rooted political traits that are characteristic of a society. The political culture considers the attitudes, values and beliefs that people in society have on the political system, including standard assumptions about how government works. For example, two people may have a political culture but have different political ideologies. In other words, a right may be of the same conservative political culture in the liberal left. In other words, political culture is something that we share as a political ideology is something that we use to define ourselves and take policy decisions. American political culture can be defined according to some core beliefs and usually divided as our commitment to democracy, equality, free enterprise and individualism. Concepts of freedom, nationalism and dependency of a legislative body rather than a ruler in hand, are also unique in our political culture. The historical origins of our political culture can be traced back to the American Revolution and the desire for freedom and our Puritan roots. Formal rules include political culture and customs and traditions, sometimes referred to as habits of the heart, which are transmitted generationally. People agree to comply with certain formal rules, such as the country's constitution and laws codified. They also live by unstated rules: for example, the US desires to accept the election results without resorting to violence. The political culture defines the limits of acceptable political behavior in a society.
