The inability of the poor, low and middle class society to enroll in undergrad institutions is purely anchored on poverty and has nothing to do with their interests of pursuing their education further. This in essence serves to shatter the dreams of many children in the country and underscore the extent to which secondary education is not within grasp of all, which creates the need for reforms and cannot be over emphasized.

For instance, the results released, from a survey conducted by the Department of Education, showed that only 16% of persons, who do not attend college, are not interested in attending college and would rather work. This leaves the other 84% interested in college, strapped by situations such as poverty, rendered incapable of realizing this dream. The priority of the 16% to work, as opposed to attend college, is also signified by high poverty levels, as this predisposes them to seek money over other things in their life (National School Boards Association, 2012).

Conclusion

It is clear from the above discussions that, gone are the days that education assured all interested people the opportunity of a brighter future. Poverty has taken a center stage in influencing the ability of the country to seek the college education and American Dream, making it a “brass ring” of only the economically viable sections of the population. Reform therefore needs to be undertaken to address this problem and include a provision, by the government, which affords College and the opportunities of secondary and graduate education to all levels and to all people, regardless of economic status. This would serve to solve the problem as poverty would no longer be a restraining factor, economic status would be off the table and money would be out of the college equation. (Biddle, 2014).
