Part 4A: Question 4

Alaska is by far the least densely populated of the US states and has 1.3 persons per square mile. The demographics of the state reflect 64.1% as non-Hispanic white and 14.8% as Native American. During the gold rush of the 1890’s, thousands of immigrants went to Alaska hoping to strike wealth which significantly increased the number of people living there. Half of the current population lives in the Anchorage metropolitan area (World Atlas, 2017).

Part 4B: Question 4

California is the most populated of the state with a population of 37,254,503 in 2010 and 39,144,818 in 2015 representing 12.18% of the entire US population. The population growth rate over the five years was 5.07%, which was among the fastest growing states in the country. The state of California covers an area 403,465 Km2 and is the third largest area in the US and implying the population density in 2015 was 97 people per square kilometer (World Atlas, 2017).

Part 4C: Question 4

Human population has been increasing at an exponential rate. The more people there are in an area increases the vulnerabilities and chances of any type of disaster or terrorist attack. The economic conditions in California allow preparedness allotments, but also are more vulnerable than those in Alaska. Given the type of disaster, more people would be affected, injured, or killed in California than Alaska. Alaska’s population density is so minute, that even if one occurred, the number of people affected would be vastly less.
