Meditation can be used to bring balance and harmony in the mind, body, and soul, and can become a substitute for food. Meditation also helps you lose weight by increasing your exercise tolerance by giving your more strength and stamina and allows you the ability to play more sports if you choose to do so.

Sleep

If you’re a sufferer of insomnia, meditation will greatly benefit you. Meditation is a natural way to alleviate insomnia and reduce sleeping disorder issues. Meditation can bring your mind to rest, so that you are not up thinking about the stresses of your life and what will be occurring tomorrow. When the mind and body relax and stress is no longer being created in the mind, it becomes much easier to sleep. Although you may be now able to fall asleep, regular meditation may reduce the amount of time you need to sleep. The reason meditation makes you need less sleep is because it increases the production of melatonin in our bodies, melatonin is the hormone that creates a restful sleep. Stress relief resulting from meditation can also be another reason why our bodies might need less sleep because we are able to sleep better at night without tossing and turning all night.

Other Physical Benefits

Other physical benefits of meditation includes; an increase in libido, reduction of PMS, aiding in digestion, the slowing down of the aging process, overcoming addiction, better motor performance skills, an increase in endocrine system function, restoration of your body’s natural Ph balance, the relaxation of the nervous system, a decrease in your muscle tension, increase in physical relations, a boost in your GABA (gamma aminobuyric acid), increase in DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone), sweating less, decrease in respiratory rate, greater skin resistance, a boost in endorphins and a decrease in levels of cortisol.

Emotional Benefits

Anxiety

Meditation is a natural and effective way to combat anxiety. Allowing our bodies and minds to let go of the sensation of danger and stress allows us to feel that we are safe and at rest. Anxiety is only an overreaction to stress or the memory or anticipation of something negative to occur but once one is able to relax and bring the mind to the present, we become in a serene mental state. Meditation also dramatically reduces stress and depression which can help ease anxiety. Also panic attacks are reduced as a benefit of meditation. A panic attack is a medical and emotional condition in which a person reacts heavily to something, usually a phobia. Heavy breathing is a well-established method for aiding with panic attacks and other times of extreme stress. Meditation may also cure the phobias that may cause panic attacks.

Meditation has also been found to help someone who suffers with PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). PTSD can be a devastating disorder that may strike at any time, hindering the ability for a veteran to move forward and enjoy living life. Medication and therapy are usually prescribed to those suffering from PTSD but meditation can also be a way to manage this disorder. Meditation may help those learn to live in the present without the memory of yesterday. Meditation will also aid in healing the heart and minds and emotional scars that one might have.

Self

Meditation can help one’s self in so many different ways. Meditating can make you become more emotionally stable by building your self-esteem, healing you from past traumas, and aiding you in experiencing a more joyful present moment. As a result you may become more emotionally mature. When you possess emotional maturity, you are in control of your emotions and become able to handle unexpected situations. Meditation may also give you a new perspective which can completely change a situation that you may be going through from negative to positive. Gaining new perspectives can help create solutions that you may have never thought of.

By removing stress, meditation can help you become more responsible, more productive, more composed, and may even make you be more satisfied with your job. You may feel like as whole new person.

Relationships

Meditating can deeply improve your personal relationships with others. Meditation revolves around both appreciating the moment and letting go of the negativity that limit our relationships. While meditating you may become aware of methods that you use to keep from being vulnerable with others but you can learn to let go and break down those barriers and allow intimate relationships to form. You may become more social because meditation increases activity in the pre-frontal cortex. This part of the brain contains our happy feelings and if we are happier, we are more willing to be social. You can become more affectionate and become more in love with yourself, others, and the world. Meditation may help you become more forgiving and more compassionate as well as less aggressive and more considerate. All of these characteristics can help you form better relationships with your partner, your family your colleagues, and most importantly, yourself.

Other Emotional Benefits

Other emotional benefits of mediation include; helping to reduce road rage, helping with grief from loss of a loved one, helping to beat petty issues, improving relations at home and at work, being more satisfied with your job, giving a feeling of revitalization and rejuvenation, and an overall increase in your happiness.

Meditation may assist in helping with certain mental disorders that one may suffer with. Meditation can help reduce OCD (Obsessive- Compulsive Disorder), a mental disorder characterized by the presence of negative and intrusive thoughts that create anxieties, Meditation is an effective way of treating OCD because it removes negative thoughts and feelings and helps you to gain control of the mind and certain impulses so they no longer control you. ADD and ADHD can also be a benefited from meditation. Through the release of endorphins and serotonin can help those with ADD and ADHD to become calm and focused because endorphins and serotonin fight the impact of excess adrenalin. Meditation can calm and empower those patients who suffer from ADD and help them cope with their illness but also allow them to take control of it.
