such as Facebook and Twitter also emerged, allowing Americans the ability to constantly connect with friends and family while on the go by posting photos and videos, status updates, and opinions on trending news topics. The downfall to portable devices: everyone is consumed by social media platforms, even while in the presence of another person.

Convergence

Media convergence is how media critics and analysts describe the changes that have occurred over the past decade. The term has two meanings: one refers to technology while the other refers to the businesses (Campbell, Martin, & Fabos, 2016, p. 11).

The first definition refers to how content is merging across media platforms (Campbell, Martin, & Fabos, 2016, p. 12). For example, newspapers, television series, and movies are available for viewing or download on the internet, such as through a television provider’s mobile application or through Netflix or Hulu.

The second definition “describes a business model that involves consolidating various media holdings … under one umbrella” (Campbell, Martin, & Fabos, 2016, p. 12). For example, Amazon first started by providing consumers the ability to search for and buy printed books online. Google allows users to search for new and old forms of media.

Media convergence has simplified everyday life allowing Americans access to the latest trends and news while on the go using their portable devices rather than having to strictly watch television for the latest updates. Although it may make things simpler, it also can pose problems for future generations. Americans are already losing interest in face-to-face communication, even when they have someone sitting across from them. We are consumed by the constant “need-to-know” provided by social media.

Conclusion

Media literacy is important for responsible media consumption because Americans need to understand the mass media channels and how they (the media) construct meaning. The critical process for understanding the media includes five steps: description, analysis, interpretation, evaluation, and engagement (Campbell, Martin, & Fabos, 2016 p. 30). Throughout the centuries, new forms of mass media emerged, each having their own benefits and uniquely shaping the American culture. The 20th century introduced several new mass media channels, including the radio, television, the internet, cell phones and smart phones. With each new innovation, old forms of mass media began to converge with new forms.
