The word civilization is very vague. Even though there are different definitions of civilization the official definition of civilization from the Webster Dictionary is “the stage of human social development and organization that is considered most advanced.” The Mongols were somewhat civilized. They were civilized in the fact that they had many improvements in technology and had a capital city. For example, the army had developed stirrups to help them accel in battle. The soldiers could now stand and shoot their bows easier, some could even time it with the horse’s gallop so that they would have a better and more accurate shot. Since the stirrups made it easy for them to stay in the saddle they slept and ate while on their horse. They had also used gunpowder to invent siege cannons. Siege cannons provided an advantage that allowed Khan to conquer other empires. Khan also used a feigned retreat tactic. He would make half of his troops start to invade a city and then have them retreat and the cities army would follow to make sure that they didn’t come back into the city. However when the other army moved out of the city walls the other half of Khan’s army would surround them and conquer their city. Mongols were not civilized in the fact that they were nomads and were always on the move.
