hand, the pre-pubescent girl in Puberty may tend to elicit perversion as a product of imagination from the beholder despite the portrayed age of innocence, though it may not always be the case, especially from members of the same sex. Otherwise, the girl in the foreground need not be naked at all, as her face will readily indicate that she is in her pre-pubescent stage. Apart from that, the color of the girl’s flesh and the bed sheet, as well as the bed, complements her nudity, while the dark background complements the hovering shadow of death. Both literary works, then, tend to evoke contrary interpretations from the audiences. Such feature epitomizes the emphasis of Symbolism --- abstraction and spiritual connotation (“Symbolism”).

While Alpine Horn relays a failed spiritual communication with God and may tend to either signify or elicit desperation, Puberty depicts the psychosexual innocence of a girl in the pre-pubescent stage of development and may tend to pique the sexual urge of the members of the opposite gender instead of inducing appreciation of the girl’s innocence. For the female audiences, such painting may also elicit mixed reactions, as some audiences may think of the painting as a representation of the bright and dark side of sexual innocence while others may merely perceive it as a depiction of a pre-pubescent girl’s commencing sexual desire, owing to her nudity and vacant stare against the backdrop of a lurking shadow. Thus, Symbolism appears to hide a message behind what its literary works present. Whatever the interpretation of the audiences may be, such works tend to stimulate their mental or emotional faculty.
