3. Colonization and art
Colonization is defined as an action or process of settling among and establishing control over the indigenous people of an area. In the 1880s Europeans became extremely interested in Africa’s resources mostly their forests and mineral wealth. Many early encounters with Europeans were recorded in African Art. Art Africans created during periods of colonization can show influence from European art work during the time.
The Queen Mother Pendant Mask from the 16th century represents Portuguese explorers with beards and hats who visited the Benin Kingdom. Explorers along the west coast of Africa in the late 1400s began to collect ivory, which was known as “white gold” at the time. Lidded Saltcellar from the 15th-16th century were produced by West African carvers. They were designed to hold precious table salt. Items like saltcellars would have been taken back to Portugal to be shown in curiosity cabinets.
African art has changed in many ways such as form, function, and meaning. Regardless in the European art market the concept of “traditional” African art exists. African artwork created pre colonization often has a much greater value to collectors and museums. Colonization may have had plenty of negative impacts but it also creates some of the continents brilliant artists.
