As we all know forest products are used in our daily lives, but over the past 50 years about half the worlds original forest cover has been lost, the most significant cause for that being ‘human beings who make unsystematic use of its resources. When we remove the forest, it is not just the trees that go; the whole ecosystem begins to fall apart with dire consequences for all of us that are why it is essential for us to have forests. They give us timber for household, wood for burning, herbal medicines, and also provide paper to write on with hundreds of other necessities. Without forest, we would not have air to breathe, our soil wouldn’t have the nutrients and the animals that make part of our ecosystem wouldn’t exist. Now in modern society people are using harmful methods on forests to increase their profits. According to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) secretariat the overwhelming direct cause of deforestation is agriculture subsistence farming which is responsible for 32%. Logging is also responsible for 14% and fuel wood removal make up 5% of deforestation ( www.ecokids.ca/pub/eco-info.cfm)
Experts do not agree on whether industrial logging is an important contribution to global deforestation. Some argue that poor people are more likely to clear forests because they have no alternatives. Other causes of contemporary deforestation may include corruption of government institutions. Currently the world’s annual rate of deforestation is estimated to be about 13.7 million hectares per year. Example Western Europe experienced significant deforestation from around 1100 to 1500 as a result of the then rapidly expanding human population. Forests are also being destroyed by acid rain resulting from our populations – causing activities and through the introduction of disease and invasive species (edugreen.teri.res.in/explore/forest.htm)
Fortunately there are things that everyone can do like planting trees is an easy way to help and prevent. Reduce the amount of products we use which involves cutting down of trees to make new product. Another way is reusing whereby we reuse an item over and over again so that fewer replacement items are needed. This helps to preserve important natural resources (like forests). We can save trees from being cut down every time we reuse scrap paper and about 1/3 paper, increase in fines on industries for cutting trees and make people aware of the importance of forest in our lives and future.
We rely on healthy forests and trees every day. It is in our best interest to appreciate, respect and preserve then we need to make sure that we are harvesting them. So that they will be around for future generations for humans and wildlife to enjoy and use. We should use some of the best method to increase forests. And some of the harmful activities of cutting trees should never be allowed in the country and in the region. The best method is planting of trees (a forestation).
