A month after the fire joseph medill was elected to be mayor because he promised for stricter fire codes and tell make sure this devastation would be prevented. Before the fire Chicago’s population was 324,000 after the fire the population grew to about half a million people. Today the Chicago Fire Department training academy is located on the site of the O’Leary property where the Great Chicago Fire started. This fire devastated the city and almost set them back into a great depression if it wasn’t for all the people coming together and helping rebuild the city the economy would have been bad and would have been a difficult process to build the economy back up.
