Television is a universal resource for pop culture influences like body image and social position. Although it is general resort for these influences in society, television can also be very educational. Young people usually watch television for entertainment, but little do they know that they are becoming smarter by the second. While reading the article, Watching Television Makes You Smarter by Steven Johnson, he states that in the end the Sleeper Curve tells us something about the human mind (830). To understand what Johnson is implying the reader must know what the Sleeper Curve is. Although he never formally defined the Sleeper Curve it is fairly obvious. It is a theory that everything bad essentially wants to prove that people are getting smarter because the media is getting more complex and deeper. For example, some would argue that bad television is not teaching anything but unpleasing matters in society. Structured television such as video games are series of competitive tests, growing more challenging over time (835). Therefore, Johnson believes that the human mind soaks in all of the information that people receive and initially use the same information in daily life. Today young people see and learn countless of different things on television that influence their interactions in society.

Pop culture is defined as a contemporary lifestyle and items that are well known and generally accepted, and cultural patterns that are widespread within a population. Society’s values are greatly affected by pop culture based on what people think of each other and on how to interact in society rather than doing what is comfortable to that person. It is intended to influence young people through media and magazines such as body image, social position, and television. These influences consist of the expectations in society; therefore, they have a huge impact on people’s everyday lives.
