Also because the crime Hester has committed, she has lived a impoverished life, but she never complained about it to her daughter, on the contrary, she used everything she have to make Pearl happy. From the description in the book, Hester is extremely strict on money for herself, “Hester sought not to acquire anything beyond a subsistence, of the plainest and most ascetic description, for herself, and a simple abundance for her child. Her own dress was of the coarsest materials and the most sombre hue; with only that one ornament,--the scarlet letter,--which it was her doom to wear.”(76). It’s obvious that Hester is not rich and she have no extra money for herself to live a high-quality life, but she dose not what her daughter to live the same life as she does. “The child’s attire, on the other hand, was distinguished by a fanciful, or, we may rather say, a fantastic ingenuity, which served, indeed, to heighten the airy charm that early began to develop itself in the little girl, but which appeared to have also a deeper meaning.”(77). Hester does everything she can to make her beloved daughter to have a normal life, because she knows that everyone will disdain and insult her daughter for what she did. Hester is nodoubtly a great and selfless mother, because she sacrifice her own life to make her daughter to have a carefree childhood, that she does not have to worry about others think about her. Pearl can only live like that, because the sacrifice Hester made to protect her.
In conclusion, from what Hester did for everyone she loves and her spirit of sacrifice, it’s undeniable that she is a selfless and is dare to sacrifice for others. Despite her bravery, this brave woman shows her calmness and pride in her dress and demeanor. Hester suffered a humiliating but strong and dignified living, and has the desire and courage to pursue beautiful love and happy life. She is also willing to sacrifice herself and her life for the ones she loves, and she is an honorable woman.
