Finally, The novel talks about how people have their own evil in them such as Dimmesdale and Pearl. This is shown in the book because Dimmesdale is a pastor and he commits the same sin that Hester did. The only reason why it shows it for Dimmesdale is because he has the bigger inner conflict with it, unlike Hester who is proud of it and won’t tell anyone that she did anything wrong. It is shown in Pearl because they talk about how Pearl is Satan’s child and that she is a demon. The reader can see that “evil” show through when she is more advanced then the other kids her age and that she is interested in strange things. The story also makes the argument for feminists and how Hester was viewed as the pretty girl, but then she made a stance for herself and how she defended herself and raised her child by herself with out a man to tell her what to do.
Over all the novel was very groundbreaking in all of topics of society that are still problems today. Hawthorne touched on things that would have been touched on for another 30 or so years. The book should be read in high schools because of those things and the fact that it is so well written with all of the beautiful metaphors of the rose and Pearl. If the book didn’t have those things in it, it wouldn’t be interesting and have kids not want to read it and ruin their education. The fact that students can relate to things in this story is another indicator that students should read it because it gives them something to relate to and want to read. [pic 5]
