When the characters in Brave New World felt emptiness in their lives, they didn’t want to believe such thing so tried looking for ways to change the situation. They realized there wasn’t a solution that could mend their misery; they found a drug called soma. Soma had created a sense of artificial peace and joy that let them to escape their pain and fill the empty spaces. By learning they were taught that "one cubic centimeter cures ten gloomy sentiments" there was no space in the world for those unhappy, worthless people. (Huxley 23). This drug made it less painful for people to experience the effects of any other emotion. Every character in the story was forced to be happy. Since every person was born to feel and live a life that felt like it was similar to something that is considered a proscribed destiny. It’s like saying if a person cannot experience anything else other than love, pain; intelligence, happiness really doesn’t feel so happy anymore. It seems so normal for the person. Something that is under control, seems so right, but actually is false. Without someone fully experiencing any other emotion besides happiness, they aren’t fully understanding of the true meaning of it. The drug alleviated these emotions, but eventually gave them fake happiness. It was supposed to make them relaxed and less stressed. Make them peaceful ,and not let anything or anyone bother them. It was to make them feel patient and so much more at ease. John said the right to be unhappy was something people of the society were not capable of. The people of the community gave up on their freedom of life. "The people who were in charge made sure everyone had no emotions” (Huxley 258). They didn’t feel pain and felt like there was no harm against them. So the final outcome was that the people of this society would never feel, understand, or get a real sense of what it takes to be happy.
Quick adjustments can often seem to be the best route. No one wants to feel miserable "to be lazy, to live a life in the constant feat of what could happen" (Huxley 222). Feeling pain and distress can be linked with failure. True happiness depends on experience. Through suffering, we have a better understanding of self-worth. Our sorrow and ache shows our ability to show our deepest affections. Fear is a necessary part of life because it allows us to regain the feeling of what it means to feel alive. Our attempt to achieve something allows us to communicate with one another in ways we might not be able to explain how we felt. The characters from Brave New World were restrained from feeling of satisfaction, luck, and good fortune. Their freedom of speech, choice, emotions, making decisions, was all under control by their government. They never had the chance to go out and do what they wanted to do, live a little, get hurt, fall in love, get an adrenaline rush, be scared, run from their fear, and cry tears of joy. Their emotions were programmed. They never created bonds with the people surrounding them and never formed relationships, or the awareness to become smarter people. They were trapped in a world designed for them to make no mistakes and feel neutral about everything. To conclude when someone never experiences the opposite of something, they never understand the true meaning of it. They never get to feel anything to its full potential, so to them it’s typical.
