there is family. All these discoveries were intellectual and emotional, as Errol had discovered a whole new world where there was unity, family, limited resources and real homes.

Discoveries can also be carefully planned for and expected. Gladys was a strong will, independent Aboriginal lady who initially fought for her family but later on fought for the entire Aboriginal society of Australia. Initially in the play, Gladys dreamed of presenting flowers to the queen. The playwright has represented Gladys’s dreams in the form of a dream sequence, where she was presenting flowers to the queen. She also dreamt of her participating in a Pick-A-Box game show and Dolly in a graduation robe. These dreams enlighten the wishes of Gladys, that she wants to be part of the Anglosaxton community and live like everyone else. “These hessians they lined the road with. The hessian that I couldn’t get through and couldn’t even peek over!” “To stop the likes of her seeing our humpies.” “But hessian! Like a Band-Aid over a sore.” All these statements said by Gladys enlighten the reader how the Anglosaxton community wanted to hide the Aborigines and prevent the queen from looking over and knowing that they even exist! This was an emotional discovery for Gladys, as she came to know that the Anglosaxton community did not want the Queen knowing their existence and wanted them to not be seen. This made Gladys very angry and then she started to fight for all of the Aboriginal society of Australia. Gladys did not stop pursuing her dreams, she went to a bank manager and asked her to recruit her daughter, Dolly, for a work position. The bank manager said, “What I’m wondering is how she’d fit in.” This was a carefully planned discovery as Gladys had already come to know that the Anglosaxton society do not want the Aborigines to be a part of them and live like them. Gladys replied with, “She’d fit in fine,” as she believed that there was no difference between the Anglosaxton community and the Aborigines. Through the relationship of Errol and Dolly, Gladys realized that not all the people who belong to the Anglosaxton community are the same. She encountered this emotional discovery when Errol helped her with the encyclopedias and when he helped her teach Gladys read and write. Near the end of the play, Gladys made a speech saying, “We demand the right to co control our own destiny. The white people too – they need to be educated about us, and our ways. And we will fight for that right. And keep fighting until we are treated right.” And finally in the end, Gladys achieved what she wanted and her dreams became true. All of these events represent the carefully planned discoveries Gladys was expecting and had always dreamt of. Through Gladys’s discoveries, readers come to know that it is not necessary for discoveries to be sudden or unexpected, they can also be carefully planned and aimed for.

So my dear fellows, I end my speech with a quote saying, “Man cannot discover new oceans unless he has the courage to lose sight of the shore.” Thank you all for your time and I hope you enjoyed my short speech.
