Character Analysis of Secret Garden

Colin and Mary become a good friend, because they found out that Colin Craven is the only child of Archibald Craven, so Mary and Colin were cousins. Colin has been in bed since his birth, he believed that he will become a hunchback and die in an early age. His servants commanded to obey him, Colin becomes furious when she fails to visit him because Mary prefers to go to the garden with Dickon.
Dickon and Mary secretly starting to bring Colin out into the Secret Garden. Ben Weatherstaff, discovers the secret of the three children. Ben said something that upset Colin so as a prove that Mr. Ben was wrong about Colin. Colin stand up on his own feet foe the very first time in his life. After this happening, Colin’s health improves miraculously.
The Children keep the improvement of Colin to the people in Manor as a secret so that he can surprise his father with his recovery when Mr. Craven return from his trip abroad. The children and Mr. Ben go to the secret garden everyday. Susan Sowerby, Dickon’s good mother also know the secret sends a letter to Mr. Craven, telling to go home immediately because something good happened.
Master Craven returns to Misselthwate immediately. He rush to the secret garden because he had a dreamed that his wife keep on saying ‘In the Garden’ ’In the Garden’.
Just as he open the door he saw Colin and Mary running. Master Craven cannot believe that he saw Collin walked to his father and Colin said. ‘ I’m going, to live forever and ever’. Master Craven and Colin go inside the garden together. They sat under the three but Colin wanted to stand while he telling the whole story to his father. Across the lawn came the Master of Misselwaithe and by his side with his head up in the air and his eyes full of laughter walked as muscularly and steadily as any boy in Yorkshire, Master Colin.
Character Analysis
- Mary Lennox
Mary the main character of the novel, The Secret Garden. It focuses on the circumstances of Mary and how she dealt with it. She is10 years old
Physical Appearance
She is ugly. The narrator describe her that has a thin face and thin body, thin light hair and a sour face. “Everybody said she was the most disagreeable-looking child ever seen. It was true, too. She had a little thin face and a little thin body, thin light hair and a sour expression. Her hair was yellow, and her face was yellow. “[ Chapter 1. Page 1 ]
She has a weak body. Because when she was still a child she can easily acquire common colds or flu. ”The Ayah had been taken ill in the night, and it was because she had just died that the servants had wailed in the huts”. [ Chapter 1, page 4 ] “Had always been ill in one way or another” [ Chapter 1, page 1 ]. “So when she was a sickly, fretful, ugly little baby she was kept out of the way, and when she became a sickly, fretful, toddling thing she was kept out of the way also.” [ Chapter 1, page 1 ]
She is an orphan. Her mother and father died because of Cholera that spread in India in which also the reason of the death of the only person who understands and cares Mary, her Ayah. “Mary found out that she had neither father nor mother left; that they had died and been carried away in the night. “[ Chapter 1, page 6 ]
Character Traits
She is violently demanding. She always ordered her Ayah to do things she wanted to be done in the way she wants. Even her Ayah is sleeping she will disturb it by means of crying. “She was as tyrannical and selfish a little pig as ever lived.” [ Chapter 1, page 1 ]
She is stubborn. She didn’t follow what the elder people saying to her. She wanted to follow what she wants even she can violate the rules that have been said to her. “She looked so stony and stubbornly uninterested that they did not know what to think about her. They tried to be kind to her, but she only turned her face away when Mrs. Crawford attempted to kiss her.” { Chapter 2, page 9 }
She is haughty. Because after the death of her parents. She had been stay at the English Clergyman’s house where his family was poor with five children living in their house. Mary didn’t like his children because they wore shabby clothes, they always quarrel and snatching toys from each other. She didn’t also like the house.”The English clergyman was poor and he had five children nearly all the same age and they wore shabby clothes and were always quarreling and snatching toys from each other. Mary hated their untidy bungalow and was so disagreeable to them that after the first day or two nobody would play with her”. { Chapter 2, page 7 }
She is standoffish and rude. When she stay at the English Clergyman’s house, Mrs. Crawford attempted to kiss her but she ignored it. “She looked so stony and stubbornly uninterested that they did not know what to think about her. They triedto be kind to her, but she only turned her face away when Mrs. Crawford attempted to kiss her, and held herself stiffly when Mr. Crawford patted her shoulder.” { Chapter 9, page 9 }
She is unfriendly. Basil the oldest of the children, feel crossed to Mary when Mary said she didn’t like boys. She also prefer to play alone rather than to play to the English Clergyman’s children. "Go away!" cried Mary. "I don't want boys. Go away!" He would let them. He's a hunchback, and he's horrid." "I don't believe you," said Mary; and she turned her back and stuck her fingers in her ears, because she would not listen any more. { Chapter 8, page 8 }
She is imperious. Mary shows her unpleasant attitude to their servants. She just want to follow all her orders. For example, Mary wants to call her nanny, "Pig! Pig! Daughter of Pigs!" because "to call a native a pig is the worst insult of all". So Mary is doubly spoiled: she thinks she can treat people however she wants because she has lots of money and because she is a white English girl in British India. "Pig! Pig! Daughter of Pigs!" she said, because to call a native a pig is the worst insult of all. She was grinding her teeth and saying this over and over again.{Chapter 1, page 2 }
She is tyrannical. Mary is so terrible to her governess that none of them stick around for longer than three months. But the real reason why Mary became tyrant because her Mother doesn’t want Mary, so she handed Mary’s care to their servants.
