Another big reason I don’t think Ebonics should be taught in school is because I feel that it would cause separatism. Classrooms would be separated by regular English and Ebonics classrooms. There are already so many different types of groups in school for whatever reasons but why create more because of language. Then that could lead to racial issues immerging from special privileges. Standard English is what brings Americans together. Schools would be spending millions of dollars buying books and hiring new teachers. Even though it’s good to know your culture and the language I feel that that’s something that can be taught at home not in schools.
Overall, Ebonics shouldn’t be taught in school since it wouldn’t prepare young students on their futures. By teaching Ebonics in school it may also cause more groups. Better yet racism because the entire student body would be separated. If anyone has heard someone speak in Ebonics most likely the certain individual didn’t understand what the speaker was trying to say for the most part. A lot of it is just words switched around for example, “Talk to you later” Can be switched to, “ill holla at you layta.” If parents or students are concerned about destroying their language and culture then they should focus on having their child be the best American they can be and be diverse as everyone else in this country. There are also clubs they could start at school for different languages and cultures. For Example, while I was attending Sunnyside High School I was part of the Latino Culture Club which helped me understand more about where I come from and get a different perspective of how I see the Mexican culture. There are so many different things we can do to bring together different races rather than separate them. The problem is getting everyone to agree on what to do. What I’m trying to get at is if it’s such a big concern than the students could easily make that change and do something about it. We as Americans should try and unify instead of separating from one another. I understand America has different cultures but we already see a lot of that on TV, the media, out in public, school, and at work. So by learning Standard English in schools it would help unify us later in life.
