We started with the stuff that was going to the deep storage section of the trailer and moved our way from there. I didn’t participate much in the moving because I was taking care of Lauryn.
As I walked around the almost empty living room with her in my arms, I thought of the first time I saw her; I was at the hospital with my family in the small room where my mom was sitting on the bed with the baby in her arms. She smiled at us with bright eyes, like all she wanted was to see our faces. It reminded me of the movies I’ve seen, the ones where a terrible tragedy occurred yet there is always a bright side. Kind of like what is happening with our home. It’s not gone forever, we just need to find a new one, but even then we still have all the memories and the things from it.
The thought of that encouraged me a little. I didn’t have to say goodbye to the home, I just have to find a new one. Just like a small creature out in the wild, always looking for shelter, moving from one place to another. I smiled at that. Finally, almost everything was done, just a couple of things upstairs that we’re taking over to new the house immediately. I was the last one out the door; I look at the empty house and almost feel the urge to cry, but don’t. I close the door and walk down the sidewalk path in the front of the house. It was time for the chaos of the next thing. Just before we leave, I look at the house one last time, taking in the view as a whole, the windows glinting in the morning sun, the flowers in full bloom, and the birds chirping with joy on the roof. This was the home I was leaving, not one that is devoid of life, but one that is looking for new inhabitants that will soon fill the rooms with laughter, light, and memories. I then turn away, and say goodbye.
