We were extremely grateful for the many individuals and families who supported us throughout my illness. Casseroles of all shapes and sizes landed on our doorstep as well as gift cards for every restaurant in the area. Our community even had a fundraiser for my family to help with medical expenses. We were also aware of how lucky we were to have one of the best hospitals in the world so close to home and I was able to receive the treatment that I needed. We kept this all in prospective while I finished my treatment and entered into my recovery stage.
Because of the special relationship my family had with the UC football team, we were able to start a foundation called Mitch’s Mission. We have one big event a year appropriately named “Playdate with the Bearcats”. The UC football players and other student athletes play games and hang out with families that attend. All the money raised goes to send cancer and blood disease patients from Cincinnati Children’s Hospital to summer camp. So far we have raised $60,000.
Who knew that the trip to the emergency room in February of 2009 would end up with sending over 100 kids with cancer to summer camp? That day brought me closer to my family and friends and gave me an appreciation for all I have. It was an event that I
did not think would have effects that still influence me to this day. Despite being sick and going through the uncomfortable treatments, I am grateful for my journey.
