In the beginning of her essay, she tells about her earliest memories from Central Park. She remembers her father had just returned from the second world war, with some gifts and a lot of memories he never talked about. This is just one of her flashbacks in the text, and since it is an essay, it is not unusual to base the main story on flashbacks and personal experience, as she does.

Susan writes in long sentences and sometimes in a bit serious way. Her language is quite formal and her tone is rather natural. She doesn’t use headlines or pictures, but her use of punctuation is normal besides she doesn’t use that many commas.

Susan’s main purpose with the essay is to share her thoughts and feelings about nature and how you can feel free in the middle of an enormous, colorful city with so many impressions of different places and cultures. She wants to convince the ones who disagree with her, which, among others, are the ones who thinks that you can only feel real nature and be truly free in the real nature. On the other side, she is just telling about her experience with Central Park and how it has affected her life, both childhood, and adolescence.

Cheever describes Central Park and the city of New York in a very positive way, which is the way she sees it and experiences it. It is not because she wants people from the countryside to move to the city, or convince people that mother nature is better when domestic, but only because she wants to share her happy memories and love for the park.
