light twisted and swirled above her, then she landed on the roof of the Mercedes” this line illustrates the rise of the Neoliberalism and how the corporation started to become greedy and decided to drop the government and cut the ties between them to maximize their profit even more. The Mercedes where she fell represents the monetary agreement offered by the corporation to the government in their way to persuade them and allow deregulation and abolish the government to allow them to fully rule themselves.
The rest of the book revolves around vengeance, retribution, vendetta, and settling a score, a synonyms of revenge in which Jennifer Government became so obsessed of that she’s willing to do whatever it takes to bring John Nike down, she ‘s so consumed that she is not willing to share her life with others. On pg. 48, when asked about dating, she states "I told you don’t date." Jennifer is so busy going after John she has no time to be in a normal relationship with anyone even neglected her own child Kate which in this book represents as the small and private companies that the government neglected.
Towards the end of the book, Hack Nike a timid, shy and weak person realized that he doesn’t like the idea of being pushed around by people such as John Nike. On page 157, he confronted the receptionist. “Can I use your phone?’ asks Hack. She looked at him doubtfully. Hack resisted the urge to drop his eyes. Instead he met her gaze with what he hoped was force and natural authority. ‘Um… sure,’ the receptionist said. She slid the phone across the desk. ‘I really shouldn’t let you though.’ She smiled… He tried not to show his surprise. Hack had never gained such results in his life.” he gained a confidence that enabled him to stand up for himself. Hack is changed through a change of mentality.
In this text, the author is trying to illustrates that we as the consumer (Hack) should stand up and unite and not as an individual but as group and to not allow anyone to manipulate us, to bully us. Its one of the fact that those big companies and/or corporation will do whatever they can to stop us from doing…..to UNITE AS ONE AND FIGHT. In the movie by Disney/Pixar’s Animation “A Bugs Life” A colony of ants with hundreds if not thousands of ants are being bullied by the group of only 12 big grasshoppers, making them work and collect food for them and even physically abuse them. The main character FLICK have had enough finally stood up and told the grasshopper “You cannot take all the food we collected, you need to leave some for us for rainy season or we will die” The leader of the grasshopper answered “Do you really think we care? You are an ant, you’re nobody, you are here to serve the grasshopper, the ants collect the food, the grasshopper eats the food as simple as that” he then turned to one of the grasshopper and whispered “If they ever realized that they out numbered us by 100 to 1 and decide to unite and fight against us, we are doomed” which in the end Flick did exactly what they were afraid of, he stood up in front of the grasshopper and said “From this day on, we are no longer serving you, we are not afraid of you, in fact you are afraid of us because you know, together, we are bigger than you and you know that!”
Although capitalism has been around and most major countries around the world follow this market, there is still hope, we may not be able to end it but as a consumer, we must be aware or be knowledgeable about it so we know how to deal with, not to get bullied or taken advantage of. In this novel, the most important part is when Hack gained confidence and stood up. It’s the author’s illustration or message to us the consumer to stand up, unite, and fight because together, we are bigger than them.
