family company with his brother, and his intentions with the company is to build houses. Tony is a true example of a guy who believes in the American dream because of his future goals and his optimistic way of approaching everything. Tony isn’t as wealthy as Jim but this doesn’t keep him from having goals. This leads us to Jim. Jim is a very polite Irish guy who Eilis has known her entire life. Jim represents the Irish community, which in this film is portrayed a bit adverse in some way, for example during the entire visit in Ireland the colors are very dark, grey and not very optimistic. Unlike the negative and grey colors in Ireland, the colors in Brooklyn are just very happy and high-key (richly colored). Maybe this has some kind of symbolic meaning. The dark colors in Ireland could symbolize the death of Eilis’s sister Rose, and the richly colored Brooklyn could symbolize her happiness, and joy.
Now this isn’t some kind of stereotypical movie about romance, because it isn’t very stereotypical at all. Just to quickly warn you, the following sentences reveal how the film ended. Therefore, if you have not seen it yet and are planning to, don’t read any further. First of all, it would seem obvious if Eilis chose to stay in Ireland with Jim because she had known him her entire life, and because of him being wealthy, and beyond that she would like to be close to her mother after her sister’s death. But Eilis chose to go back to Tony who isn’t rich or anything special, but they love each other.
This is an emotionally strong movie that makes you think deeper about how it is to immigrate from one culture to another. The realistic setting in the movie makes it very true to life and therefore drags you into the story no matter what genre of film you are into. This is why I strongly recommend this movie to all movie lovers.
