Clockwork Orange

“Clockwork Orange” is a crime & science fiction film released in 1971 and set in UK. It was produced and directed by Stanley Kubrick. The film is an adapation of the Anthony Burgess´s nobel. Even though Kubrick could follow the guidelines of the writter, the director was accused of misunderstanding the essence of the nobel. Furthermore, the film was banned in many cinemas due to the high content of violence.

The main character is Alex, a young boy who loves as much extreme violence as art. He is the leader of a maniac group friends called “drugos”. They spend their time beating people and paradoxically, listening classical music as well. One day, they commit a crime and Alex is arrested. Once in jail, a governor persuades Alex´s parents to involve him in a scientist experiment for restraining his misbehaviour. As a result, Alex will be apparently cured and reintegrated to the society as a free man. However, his mind will be out of control and he will encounter many obstacles being bullied...

Even though the violence is a strong topic in this film, the plot is quite complex. At the beginning, Alex is seen as a violent maniac, but after the treatment he is unable to feel passion anymore. Also, his feelings about classical music have been destroyed. This fact changes the insight into the plot, then the spectator will realize that the authentic “maniac” is the Goverment. So the film explores a satirical and visceral point of view about the rules of our society and how we are extremely manipulated by our governors. Kubrick suggests us to think about punishment, hedonism and moral limits.

“Clockwork Orange” is probably one of the most iconic and provocative films of all times. Not only is an absorving film, the exquisit treatment of the scenes, original costumes, a memorable artistic work and performances, makes this film as a must see technically. In addition, the extraordinary background music evokes the feelings of the characters and emphasises the scenes powerfully. I would highly recommed this film to anyone who appreciates unconventional and complex plots.
