People that read this play may consider Alfieri as a second character, not so important in the story. But if we analyze more deeply Alfieri and his importance, we may change of opinion.This play is based on the clash between two worlds, the immigrants and the americans. And this is clearly demonstrated when Marco and Rodolpho come into Catherine´s and Eddie's life. When they met, two different type of lifes cross showing the different realities of their lives. Between this encounter Alfieri is trapped in the middle of both sides. As Alfieri once was a new immigrant and also may be consider as an american because of the amount of time that he has being living in america.He is living at the same time these two cultures and ideas of right and wrong. Arthur Miller introduces Alfieri In a View From The Bridge for us to understand the play and to have clear what is going throughout the story. Alfieri takes role of an important character and in order to understand this play he is necessary.
Alfieri has a great value in the play because of his role as narrator. This is clearly shown throughout the play, therefore to help us understand better what happens in the play. “And yet , it is better to settle for half, it must be! And so I mourn him-Admit it -with a certain… alarm.” At the end of the book Alfieri closes the story with a reflection, this show us clearly what happened on the book. This is very important for the readers because we can understand better the story. The quote demonstrate that Alfieri was the narrator of the story. Being the narrator means that also takes the role of the Greek Chorus in this play. Alfieri opens the play and later he starts talking and describing the characters of the play. “He was a good man as he had to be in a life that was hard and even. He worked on the piers when there was work, he brought home his pay, and he lived. And toward ten o'clock of that night, after they had eaten , the cousin came.” The quote shows Alfieri as the greek chorus, he comments about an action of the play and afterwards he let the play continue. The job of the greek chorus is exactly what Alfieri did in this quote, step into the story, explain something for us to have everything clear and then leave. The greek chorus also sometimes gets into the play and intervenes in order to help the story. “Yes, but things have to end, Eddie, that's all. The child has to grow up and go away and the man has to learn to forget. Because after all, Eddie- what other way can it end? Let her go. That's my advice. You did your job , now it's her life; wish her luck, and let her go.” The greek chorus commonly has a conversation with tragic characters in order to help.
