Choice of Research Topic
You shall be given a list of research topics which is of interest to your potential supervisors. From this list, you are required to identify a topic (listed under the potential supervisor). Once done you may approach and discuss with your potential supervisor an agreed research topic closely related to the knowledge gained in your degree program through the subjects studied till date. You will then need to develop a workable research proposal on the chosen topic. The proposal is an academic piece of work, written for an academic audience. It should therefore be critical, and should follow the normal format for an academic research proposal concerning references etc.
This proposal will be executed in Part-2 of this subject where the complete research will be undertaken and a report will be written under the supervision of a faculty member. The work that will go into your research project will form a significant part of your third year assessment. This is certainly much more than any piece of academic work you have previously encountered, and so time management is very important.
Whatever topic you choose, it will need to become quite focused – if you choose a very broad topic you will be able to do little more than scratching the surface. If you are not sure what precise focus to choose, you can start with something reasonably broad and refine it as you go along. As time is of the essence and the research project work continues to Part 2 until completion, you should at the very least try to focus your topic at an early stage, though any change you do wish to make must be discussed and agreed with your supervisor.
Your designated tutors will be there to help you shape your research topic.
The form and content of the research project must be agreed with your research project supervisor, and you should consider very carefully the guidance he or she provides you with.
Research Project Supervisor
Once you have identified your potential supervisor you may start discussing with him/her on your research proposal during Research Design (Part 1). Please note that each supervisor is NOT allowed to have more than 4 students under his/her supervision. Hence, the choice of supervisor and ultimately the research topic will be on a first come first serve basis. Once a supervisor is chosen, you may not switch supervisors nor research topic area.
Please take note that your research supervisor is only obliged to help you to confirm and check your research problem with some limited assistance on literature review during Research Project 1 (part 1). Students should not expect more detailed interaction during this process (in which the student may approach the workshop tutors for this). Bearing in mind that there are different supervision styles, there will be different supervisors who will allocate time and effort differently to their research students in tandem with the expertise area of the supervisors themselves. Supervisors will only have the obligation of providing you consultation ONLY at the commencement of Business Research Execution (PART 2) of your project.
Your supervisor will be expecting you to have further meetings over the course of the academic year, but it is your responsibility to contact him or her to arrange appointments. You should recognise that your supervisor is a busy person with plenty of other responsibilities, so you should not expect him or her to be at your beck and call every hour of every working day. When making appointments, it is often useful to agree what you hope to have achieved by the time of the appointment.
Your supervisor will give you advice concerning the primary and secondary research you undertake. You will be expected to come up with ideas yourself, but the supervisor will give comments, make suggestions for improvements or further research, etc. Thus the question "What research do you think I should do?" is likely to be met with "What do you think you should do?", but the question "This is what I intend to do with regard to primary and secondary research – what do you think?" will be met with a much more constructive reply.
Your supervisor will also be prepared to discuss the research project in broad terms with you, but please remember that the research project is an individual piece of work, not a joint enterprise. Thus, you may want to show your supervisor what you have written in draft, but do not expect him or her to proof-read it! Your supervisor will be one of the markers of your research project, so it is in your interests to take his or her advice very seriously.
Deliverables (Research Project- Part 1)
Students are required to submit an online Research Proposal as a deliverable for Research Project 1 which will be marked accordingly (only MS Word file are to be submitted into Turnitin where the proposal will be marked accordingly). Failing the research project 1 (Research Proposal- Part 1) will result in the student retaking the entire subject and not being able to move on to research project part 2 (Research Project 2).
Please see Research Project Part 1 Coursework for more detailed explanation of the Research proposal which will make up 40% of your entire Research Project. Your Research Project Part 2 will make up the remainder 60%.
TURNITIN Report
Students will need to put their assignment through turnitin account with the following details:
Class: March 2017 PRJ 3173 Research Project Design
For students to enrol in this class, they will need both the enrolment password and the unique class ID.
- class ID: 14903179
- enrolment password: PRJ3173
-
Note: Should you ever forget the class ID; it is the number to the left of the class name on your class list.
A similarity report should be printed out and attached separately. No more than 10% similarity will be allowed (if it is more, marks will be deducted accordingly).
Do not submit your project in repository because verification rerun will be performed.
Print out your Turn it in Report and attach it as a separate sheet to your project.
*** The deadline of your final Project submission is on Thursday, 22 of June 2017 @2pm via email
