The say I must be one of the wonders

Of god's own creation

And as far as they can see they can offer

No explanation” Auggie was born with a rare medical facial deformity, which he refers to as “manibulofacial dysostosis”. The doctor explains to Auggie’s parents that “the odds of someone getting the same combination of syndromes that came together to make Auggie's face were like one in four million”. In other words, it almost impossible for anyone to suffer such random genetic disorder- there’s “no explanation” for it. Auggie is one in a million, and that makes him so special. We feel pity for Auggie and wonder If being “speical” like him is a good thing- especially when people Auggie meets keep staring at him with curiosity and sometimes fear. However, people love him when they get used to his look, like the waitresses at the local cafe calling him “darling” and giving him lollipops, like his big sister Olivia’s friend Miranda treating him like her own brother, like the classmates starting to realize how humorous he is, and how the guys who are not really close to him at school bravely defense him when he gets bullied by bigger kids. People adore Auggie because he is sweet boy, and beyond all, he is a strong child. He knows how to accept his appearance and even cracks jokes about it. Instead of depressing about himself, Auggie does not give up trying to achieve his wish to be an ordinary kid. However, Auggie would never be an ordinary kid. He’s extra- ordinary. The author implies it when she added the epigraph at the first page of the novel. The lyrics say “They say I must be one of the wonders/ Of god's own creation”. Auggie must be created by God. Auggie is imperfect, but he is perfect the way he is- a creation of God.

By adding the epigraph, the author heads us to the right direction of how we should understand the story. The graph does an excelent job, giving us the first ideas of August and the true meaning behind his abnormal look.
