RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Conducting a survey on this particular topic will provide the institute with the information needed to make an informed decision on whether or not it is a viable requirement. To complete the research for this particular topic, a survey was conducted online at www.surveymonkey.com.

RESULTS

During a recent survey of 15 people, the majority of them were students of a business program. With 46.67% of all surveyed people attending the Prince Philip Drive Campus. The remainder of students are attending campus’ in Burin, Carbonear, Clarenville, Gander, Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Ridge Road and St. Anthony.

This survey is covering all different areas of Newfoundland and Labrador. Respondents were asked what brand of computers are currently used in their study. It appears that the majority of schools are using Apple with a response rate of 26.67%. Dell and HP follow will 20% each. Acer and IBM each had a 13.33% rate while Toshiba was the least used with only 6.67%.

The results from this recent study identified that these students use the computers on a daily and/or weekly basis. Although 60% of students agreed that Apple or Mac software is not required to complete assignments or access College programs, 26.67% were unsure and 13.33% said that it was needed sometimes.

Apple is the preference of computer brands for completing assignments. Acer and Dell is the next selected preference while HP and Toshiba is only preferred by 2 people. All other systems had no results for being a preferred computer brand.

Everyone agreed that their computers had the ability to run the internet and email. 80% of people could also use word processing. Although, only 66% had the ability to run PowerPoint or Excel. 53% of people can use Adobe while all other software cannot be used on half of the systems.

The respondents were asked if they would attend the College if they were required to use an Apple computer. 53.33% said yes, 33.33% stated no and 13.33% were unsure while the projected results were 70% off students.

After collecting all the research, it appears that the Prince Philip Drive Campus of the College of the North Atlantic may not be appealing to a large number of potential or returning students if the Apple computer system becomes mandatory.

LIMITATIONS

The surveys were conducted by 15 people due to the short amount of time to complete the surveys. Many surveys were sent out but due to the dead line of this report only half the amount of surveys were sent back complete. The surveys were sent out during most of the college student’s midterm exam week, this made it hard for the students to find the time to complete them and for us to find the right students to complete the survey.

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMDATIONS

After compiling all the survey results, it appears that students would not be attracted to the Prince Philip Drive campus if Apple computers were a requirement for completing a program. The predicted results for students that would continue to attend this campus if the Apple computers were mandatory was 70%. The percentage of respondents that said yes when asked if they would attend the college if they were required to use an Apple computer is 53.33. While 33.33% stated that they would not and 13.33% were unsure.

If you combine the number of people that said yes (53.33) and the amount that were unsure (13.33) it would equal 66.66% which is still lower, then expected.

Upon this conclusion, the recommendation for this campus would be to not make it a requirement to use the Apple computers.

DATA CALCULATIONS

The calculations that had to be made to reach the conclusion is by adding the total number of people that responded yes (8) to the amount that was unsure (2). Then you take 10 and divide it by the total number of people that had responded to the question (15). This will give you a total of 66.67%.
