They also have to make decision according to their ‘‘importance’’. They should see which direction to go taking care of the level of importance for the country.
2.2.2 Discussion Questions.
As we learned what happened in this specific case from previous part, now we will answer the discussion questions one by one in this section.
-
- 1. Should Barry complain about his treatment? To whom? If he did complain, what power tactics should Barry use?
- In most cases, complaining about his treatment would not really help Barry to have better career opportunity. It may harm Barry’s position in the company even more. Especially when his current boss, Raphael, already has a very good relationship with CEO.
- Instead of complaining, he can be wise and try to solve problem. In order to do that, he can use some tactics to strengthen his position in the company and make more people aware of his effort.
- He needs to be more open to his boss as he had a good relation as co-workers in the past.
- He needs to show good behavior and establish better relationship with his colleagues and other senior officers.
- Of course, working harder is one of the must-dos.
These tactics can be much more effective than just complain over what he does not like.
Even after taking these actions, if Barry still feels that there has been no change in how he is being treated at work and wants to complain about this, he needs to consider using some power tactics in order to gain what he wants. Power tactics he could use includes:
- Rational persuasion – Presenting logical arguments and factual evidence to demonstrate that a request is reasonable. Rational persuasion is one of the power tactics that is known to have high effectiveness than other tactics. According to the textbook, rational persuasion is the only tactic effective across organizational levels.
- Other power tactics that may need to be taken into considerations are: Consultations – Increasing support by involving the target in deciding how you will accomplish your plan.
Coalitions – Enlisting the aid or support of others to persuade the target to agree.
Personal appeals – Asking for compliance based on friendship or loyalty.
These tactics may help him to overcome the given situation, as it shows that he does care about the organization and his job rather than just go and complain about things that ended up in a way he did not want.

2. Studies have shown that those prone to complaining tend to have less power in an organization. Do you think complaining leads to diminished power and influence, or the other way around? How can Barry avoid appearing to be a complainer?
Most of the times, people who complain or “whine” do not appear very good in other’s eyes. Studies also proved that those who are more into “whining” when it comes to unfavorable situations tend to have less power in an organization. Those people complain a lot about the situation only show negative things but they do not provide the solutions to make the situation better.
In case Barry decides to complain about the situation, he needs to be very wise towards how to express it. Because if he does it wrong, he may give wrong impressions to other senior officers and may end up ruining his image in work place. If he does not want to look like “whiner”, he should know what way everyone can have satisfaction. If he could provide win-win solution to all the parties involved, he would not look like a regular “whiner”.

- 3. Do you think Barry should look for another job? Why or why not?
Before deciding to leave his job and look for another one, he should consider the steps that have potential to improve the work situation. I would say it is always better to face into your problems instead of running from it. Because similar situation may happen at any company.
