Obstacles
The biggest obstacle to me becoming the leader of my desire is the fact that I take on more than I can manage. In today’s business model, team behaviors have become a must for continued improvements and organizational success. It is difficult for me at times to step aside and allow others into my activities. I know that issues would get solved in other fashions and time would be saved if I allowed it to take place. I just have to let go of the “if I want something done correctly, I need to do it myself” attitude. I have taken the first step of overcoming this type of insecurity of other’s abilities and will be attending a four day team concept and team builder’s seminar in December of this year. My work load will be greatly reduced if I achieve the change in this behavior and I will be able to focus more on the vision of the company.
Goals & Action
As stated above, I will be attending a four day team concept and team builder’s seminar in December of this year. This will be a positive step towards changing my individualist ideals and transition into more of a team oriented manager and leader. Also, within the next 4 weeks, I will be involved in 6 sigma training and will be starting a strategic planning course offered by the American Society for Quality (ASQ). These training programs, seminars and courses will provide me with a start towards my management and leadership goals.
In the next 4 months, I plan on continuing my focus on changing from an individual oriented manager towards more of a team oriented manager and leader. I and other individuals within the organization have scheduled Dale Carnegie courses that will focus on relationships within a team atmosphere and team oriented success. Along with the standard 6 sigma training, I will be starting the journey of receiving my black belt, which I should successfully complete it by the middle of January, 2011. With the strategic planning training I will receive from ASQ, I have scheduled an organizational strategic session with my current company which will take place in early February, 2011. I will be the leader of the strategic planning session and will involve seven other managers within the company.
Resources
The obstacles which are preventing me from meeting my goals will not be overcome without the help of my fellow peers, the leadership within my current place of employment, and my own stubbornness to change my management style. I need the support of fellow managers to be successful in their own abilities and to share in my chosen ideals and management style. If they are not willing to help create a team oriented structure, then it will be difficult for me to move away from my current thinking as an individualist. I have to have the support of my company leader to help mentor me in a positive direction and to give feedback, whether it be positive or negative. To overcome the obstacle of being stubborn towards the change in management styles, I must have confidence in my own leadership abilities and focus my vision towards the best outcome for the organization.
