In order to be a good leader, one who is respected and valued, I have to engage and enable my employees in the decision making process to make them to feel esteemed. In the military, executing and enabling an organization are imperative in bringing about vision; people work hard because of a believe in something bigger than themselves. During meetings, the communication has to be adapted to the audience and the speaker should apply personal style. I learned that rehearsal is a key to deliver the best speeches, comprised of passion, audience engagement, logic, and credibility. The focus must not be on contents alone, but must also consider physical aspects. It is worth noting that that even though I applied participative leadership skills and assigned responsibilities, it is critical to retain your leadership position and occasionally be assertive to guarantee that company objectives are met. In addition to enabling employees to be a good leader, I also have to apply great active listening. The lack of effective communication and not adapting to your audience, is the main reason most institutes lose productivity and eventually, morale.

When I was promoted to director of logistics, I was part of the strategic planning process of my unit and learned that strategic management process needs to be done after extensive research and planning. Being able to identify objectives or goals of the unit, proper analysis of visions, formulating a plan, implementing the strategies, and evaluating and controlling the strategy, have to be clearly set and communicated to all employees. Strategic planning is vital for the success of the business processes and goals, should be realistic, and attainable. Along with that methodology, managers must know that while technology is an important catalyst, it is not enough on its one, and more is required. I will apply this concept when I start my own company, which will include innovative technology, that has to satisfy a purpose in the market to be profitable and effective.

The lessons I learned from my experience can be applied in the future by potential business leaders and employees in order to be successful. Managers must be visionary, creative, and emotionally intelligence to enable them to handle their responsibilities effectively. It important to learn the attributes of employees (other people) and to know the strengths and weaknesses of your team, to delegate duties and avoid failures. Future leaders ought to understand that participative leadership style is important for employee engagement and participation. However, assertiveness and authority is vital in ensuring that employees handle their responsibilities effective and the chain of command in the organization is recognized. Proper planning of the processes is vital and the plan should be followed and implemented. The leaders should understand that there are several ways to lead depending on the employees, skills, and competencies of both the employees and the manager. The leaders should follow their instincts, force a pace, and develop a reputation for credibility.
