Camera angles are used to influence the audience further, showing the preferred point of view of the different scenes. Straight angles are used throughout at the eye level of the audience, allowing them to integrate themselves within the scene. High angles are used in the film to show the power of the character in the scene. For example, when The Joker is robbing his bank, right before he is set to leave, a banker in his bank is running his mouth about the robbers. Through the high angle, you see The Joker take his mask off and while talking to him he sticks a bomb into the bankers mouth. Through high angle, the audience was able to capture the dominance of The Joker. Though Nolan as is able to show dominance in a different way through a low angle shot. He did this by having the camera angled up in the interrogation room showing Batman standing over The Joker. It might look like the Batman appeared dominant and in control of the situation, but The Joker is the one really in control mentally by the way he is carrying the conversation. He dominates the scene that allowed Batman to lose his temper and fall right into the Joker’s trap.
Nolan shows the tug–of-war power and control between Batman and the Joker throughout the film. By using camera angles that gives different views to the action taking place and non-diegetic sound that keeps you at the front of your seat to see what’s next, Nolan was able to establish a film that made the audience really have to pay attention to the details of the film. Even the small details play a big part in bringing the film’s story all together.
