Latham, Donna, and Bryan Stone. Music: Investigate the Evolution of American Sound. White River Junction, VT: Nomad, 2013. Print. Inquire and Investigate.
In the book Music, it tries to give a kids’ explanation to American music genres. It explains the religious, social and political influences that inspired many musicians. It teaches readers to analyze the lyrics of songs and try to understand their meaning. There are also many activities that teach the physics of sound vibrations, decibel levels, acoustics and vocal styling. The book is also a great source for many references.
The book is a great place to get new references and teaches how music reflects the artists either religious, social and political influences. This will help prove that music is just a reflection of the changes in society will reflect in changes of music.
Howe, Hubert S., Jr. "The Twentieth Century in Perspective." The Twentieth Century in Perspective. Hubert S. Howe Jr., Jan.-Feb. 2002. Web. 4 Jan. 2016.
The article starts off by stating how amazing the break from the past took place in the twentieth century. Then the article uses the word “Tonality” to describe the musical system that developed between the years. It tells of how before the twentieth century many could only listen to music if there was a live concert going on.
This article could give me a perfect idea of how lonesome and hard it was for musicians before the 20th century giving a bigger impact of how amazing music’s rise was.
Yarm, Mark. Everybody Loves Our Town: An Oral History of Grunge. 1st ed. New York: Crown Archetype, 2011. Print.
The book gives a description of the more violent and crazed uprising of grunge by people who experienced it firsthand. It was published to accord with Nirvana’s song Nevermind and Pearl Jam’s album Ten, albums that changed rock history forever. It’s a book that perfectly gives a good oral history instead of a narrative one because it is not analytical. It doesn’t offer insight into its subject by editorializing or trying to show something in a larger subject. It tells the whole story: from the founding of the Deep Six bands to the worldwide success of grunge’s big four (Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and Alice in Chains); from the rise of Seattle’s cash-poor, hype-rich indie label Sub Pop to the major-label feeding frenzy that overtook the Pacific Northwest; from the simple joys of making noise at basement parties and tiny rock clubs to the tragic, lonely deaths of superstars Kurt Cobain and Layne Staley.
The book will demonstrate how music influence a person’s moral and cultural values without a scientific view as so many. With the use of how grunge music affects a person’s moral status I can take how music was influential in a person’s life.
