Barbie’s extravagant life is filled with the fanciest furniture to the most expensive houses you will ever think of. Barbie basically lives in her own “Utopia palace of pinkness and flowers.” Not only little kids but even adults influenced by Barbie throughout their childhood have been known to spend millions of dollars on transforming their beloved homes into Barbie palaces. Would you ever think, some people go bankrupt trying to replicate Barbie’s mannequin mansion? Spending on the biggest and best swimming pools, top of the line appliances and doing ridiculous acts like adding chandeliers in bathrooms….? Isn’t it bizarre having the Barbie logo plastered all over the walls of their treasured homes!? The website Teen Ink states that “Paris Hilton has an extraordinary Barbie car worth $200,000 to fulfil her childhood dream of having a car just like Barbie’s. Like most little girls I also dreamed of having a Barbie doll house filled with all the clothes and mostly the furnishings as they lit up and made cute sounds. This shows how Barbie has influenced children to be just like her.
If kids were educated about the consequences Barbie’s lifestyle could lead to, would they still admire her or would their childhood fantasy go up in flames? Personally, I believe Barbie is a great fictional character but not at all a positive role model. She is just a doll-can’t we just leave it at that? What really is the point in trying to imitate her looks and going bankrupt, spending millions on clothing and luxuries? The song by Shania Twain “She’s Not Just A Pretty Face” says it all. “She is every woman in the world”, and everyone wants to be her. This now is what our society thinks of a role model. Do you still believe Barbie is that wonderful, innocent plastic face?
