- Advantages of Organizations by purpose:
- It gives more certainty of achieving the main purpose by bringing the while job under a single director where no one can interfere.
- It is easily understood by the public.
- Boosts energy and loyalty among workers due to the focus on the main objective.
- Limits of Purpose Groups:
- Impossible to divide the work of any government without having overlap.
- Will fail to make up to date technical devices and specialists.
- There will be no big focus on the people within an organization.
- Falls easily into the habit or over centralization.
Organization by the process: engineers is a good example.
- Advantages:
- Guarantees the maximum utilization of up to date technical skills.
- It makes possible also the economies of the maximum use of labor saving machinery and mass production.
- Best adapted to the development of a career service, where it is easier to create a career ladder when all your workers are engineers not from different disciplines.
- Disadvantages:
- It is impossible to aggregate all of the work of the government on such basis alone.
- There might be loss of the main purpose because such organizations focus on how things are getting done not on what is accomplished.
- They show greater degree of arrogance and unwillingness to accept democratic control.
Organization by the clients (i.e. Veterans).
- Advantages:
- Simplification to the consumer, no need to go for different places for different things.
- Specialization among worker where people are doing the same thing over and over again.
- Elimination of travel from one place to another.
- Disadvantages:
- Sacrifice the efficiency of specialization where people are doing many things.
- The vulnerability in front of pressure groups.
Organization based on the place:
- Advantages:
- Greater ease and coordination of services rendered within a given area.
- Disadvantages:
- Difficulty to maintain a uniform nationwide policy.
- The danger of too narrowed and short-sighted management.
- The increased difficulty of making full use of technical services and the highest specialization because of the division of the work into limited blocks.
Keep in mind that there is no one right way to do things; each member of the enterprise is working for some major purpose, uses some process, deals with some persons, and serves or works at some place.
