child’s innocence, but also prepare them for the world. Not only is this against beliefs but it can be highly inappropriate. Teaching students about homosexuality is not
“child-friendly.” This curriculum can also consist of explicit language, which isn’t appropriate for some age groups. Some parents may not be ready to sit down and have and have a conversation with their teenager about what sexuality is right and wrong.
Lastly, Gay- Straight Alliances that students create in schools may not be acceptable and is also considered as labeling. According to, Preface to ‘Are Schools Justified in Restricting Students’ Expression? A high school in Kentucky allowed students to create a Gay-Straight Alliance support group. An opposing school board member, Bill Lewis, stated, “ When a school authorizes a student group called the Gay-Straight Alliance, it isn’t just giving kids a place to talk about how they feel. It’s also giving homosexual behavior and implied stamp of approval from a tax supported institution…. And I believe that’s wrong.” Although, Gay-Straight Alliances help LGBT or homosexual students make it easier for them to cope, these may not be appropriate. The conflict of whether homosexuality should be permitted on school campuses shows how difficult it is for schools to decide what should be restricted in schools. GSAs are approvals from schools and the community. The goals and means of this movement brainwashes students in schools, restricts free speech of the opposing people and distorting religious beliefs. If homosexuals are able to express themselves, then students and parents that disagree with these alliances should have the power to speak up. The school’s main task is protecting the youth and maintaining a positive learning environment. Religious Alliances should be tolerated and supported in schools if GSAs can be tolerated and supported. So the freedom of expression backfires in educational settings when students start to have disagreements that causes greater conflict. GSAs may also be taken advantage of by LGBT students. Students at the ages of thirteen through eighteen could be having open discussions about sex.
There are multiple reasons why homosexuality and/or GLBT should not be discussed in schools. First, it can cause discrimination towards these type of students in school. Also, not only is there discrimination but, homosexuals or LGBT students get bullied whether it physical bullying or cyberbullying. Next, parents/guardians may disagree with their teenager discussing homosexuality in class or in the school building period. Finally, homosexuality can start great conflict against parents, students, and school boards. All of these issues can be reduced or prevented. As a result, homosexuality is not appropriate or necessary for schools.
