Proteinuria

[pic 4] This disease is characterized as an abundance of protein in the urine which later on may result to chronic kidney disease. Here is what happens: proteins are too large to pass through the filters of the kidneys, therefore, when an abundance of protein is in the urine, the urine filters are damaged. When proteins accumulate in the urine, fluids accumulate in an area of the body causing edema because the proteins do not perform their function of transporting food stuffs in the body via blood. Proteinuria can also be a result of overproduction of proteins by the body.

Symptoms

You are not able to see protein in your urine. The only way to know if you have proteinuria is to have your urine tested. Most people do not notice any symptoms. If you do have symptoms, they might include foamy urine or swelling in your hands, feet or face.

Treatment

If only mild proteinuria, it does not necessarily require a treatment. The primary treatment for proteinuria will be to control both blood pressure and blood glucose levels, which may be achieved through lifestyle changes and could include taking additional medication.

If fluid is accumulating in your ankles or around the lungs, you may be given water tablets, a diuretic medication that helps to remove water from the body.

If the level of kidney damage is severe, you may need to undergo kidney dialysis or a kidney transplant.

Symptoms

- loss of intellect and memory

- change in personality

- loss of balance and co-ordination

- slurred speech

- vision problems and blindness

- abnormal jerking movements

- progressive loss of brain function and mobility

Treatment

Creutzfeldt - Jakob disease has no cure yet but treatments to slow down the progress of the disease and relieve symptoms are available. This can include using medication such as anti-depressants to help with anxiety and depression, and painkillers to relieve pain. Some people will need nursing care and assistance with feeding.
