Treatment Options

There are several treatment and care options when a patient is diagnosed with heart disease. Heart disease can be care for in the form of surgery or surgeries, medication, and a change in the patient’s lifestyle. Making lifestyle changes can help treat and prevent coronary heart disease (CHD). Lifestyle changes such as stop smoking, follow a healthy diet, physical activity, maintaining a healthy weight, and managing stress and depression; will help prevent heart disease. According to National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institution, (2014) "Making lifestyle changes can help prevent or treat coronary heart disease." Those treatments may be all the patient need.

Also, according to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institution, (2014) heart disease can also be treated through medications. If changing the lifestyle are not enough, then the patient physician may have to prescribe medication. The medication(s) will help reduce the heart workload and relieve the coronary heart disease symptoms. Decrease the chances of the patient having a heart attack, lower the cholesterol and blood pressure, plus any other health issues that can cause heart disease. Prevent or delay the need for heart surgery and also prevent blood clots.

Lastly, if all else fails the last option to treat heart disease will be surgery. According to National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institution, (2014) " Both angioplasty and CABG are used as treatment options for heart disease." It is up to the patient and doctor on what procedure or surgery to do best for the heart. Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI), also known as angioplasty is a non-surgical procedure that a physician does that opens blocked or narrowed coronary arteries. Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) is a surgery that removes arteries or veins in other parts of the body and use them to bypass narrow or blocked coronary arteries. Cardiac Rehabilitation is a treatment that is used with patients who have had a heart attack, angina, angioplasty, and or CABG. Cardiac Rehabilitation is a medical rehab supervised program that is to improve a patient of heart disease health and well-being.

Heart Disease is "a cardiovascular disease generally refers to conditions that involve narrowed or blocked blood vessels that can lead to a heart attack, chest pain (angina) or stroke" (Dictionary.com, n.d.). Within this paper, we as a team have explained who heart disease has affected. What the cost in health care is for a heart disease patient. The cost of treatments, and the treatment options that are available for the patients at risk of the disease.
