Research Design

The researchers will conduct a qualitative research method with a case study approach since the researchers aim to know the experiences of the Filipino emerging adults. By using this approach, the researchers will be able to determine the characteristics of a young Filipino adult and what issues they were facing right now. Moreover, this approach is phenomenological, allowing the researchers to enter into the lives of the Filipino emerging adults.

Selection of Participants

The researchers will use purposive sampling in choosing their participants. They will choose five (5) participants whose age is between 20 to 25 years old and who is also a Filipino citizen living in Davao City.

Instruments

The researchers will use an open ended question followed by probing questions in interviewing the participants. The researchers will also use an audio recorder in gathering the data.

Data Analysis

In the analysis of data, the researchers looked for specific life experiences of emerging adults, based on their interview responses.

The steps that the researchers will perform is that of Interpretative Phenomological Analysis, and is as follows:

Data Transcription. This consists of a verbatim (semantic level of transcription) document of the interview that transpired between the researchers and the respondents based on the audio/video recording, together with personal notes of the researchers during the interview and during observations (Smith & Osborn, 2007). This allowed the researchers to review and organize their data into one form and have a concrete foundation for conceptualization. Each respondents’ responses will be transcribed individually.

Clustering Themes. The emergent themes was listed on a separate sheet of paper. This was repeated for all of the responses of the respondents individually (Smith, 2007).

Connecting Themes. With the help of list of clustered themes, the researchers looked for connections or similarities across all the respondents’ responses (Smith, 2007).

Table with themes of each research questions. The researchers presented an outlined form of the emergent themes (Biggerstaff & Thompson, 2008) categorized into the common characteristics and life issues faced by emerging adults. This served as the Master table of themes for the whole group (of respondents). In each tables of the themes, the researchers will be having a frequency and it will be label as general, typical and rare. General (all or all but one case) consist of atleast 4 similar responses, typical (more than half of the case up to general) consist of 2 similar responses and variant or rare (two cases to typical) consist of 1 to 2 similar response (Hays and Singh, 2011).

Conclusion. For the final step, the researchers moved from the master table of themes to a written, narrative account, outlining and describing the meanings inherent in the emerging adult’s experiences (Smith & Osborn, 2007). The researchers discussed the experiences of the emerging adults specific to the dimensions mentioned from the conceptual framework, and a conclusion was formed.
